Date: January 2021 – June 2021

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has suggested the study of river navigation in the Koshi River. The main objective of the consulting services is to prepare the feasibility study of water navigability along the Koshi River from Chatara to Tumlingtar. This survey includes a 75 Km long stretch of river from Chatara to Tumlintar including a cross-section of 100 m intervals.

Overall Services provided:

The services will be provided by the firm is

  1. River longitudinal and Cross-section surveys – Carry out the bathymetric survey, including river cross section at 100 m intervals and at least 100 m from the bank on Both sides
  2. Hydrological study - A hydrological study of the Koshi River shall be carried out to ascertain a clear picture of water availability in the river during different seasons. One-time discharge measurements will be carried out at Chatara Bridge during the river survey for calibration of the hydraulic model.
  3. Sedimentation study - The consultant will collect the data from DHM or secondary source for variation in sediment transport) sources of sediments, locate degrading, aggrading, and stable reaches, and correlate these results with historical data. Sediment samples will be collected at three locations during the river survey and analyzed in a laboratory for sediment gradation analysis.
  4. Hydraulic Model study   - A one-dimensional hydraulic model will be developed for the river stretch to simulate navigation depths at various stages and to test different shipping load scenarios. The model will also be used to test navigation improvement options, such as dredging, channelization, etc.
  5. Traffic study - The features (capacity, types) of boats/ships used in river navigation shall be studied in concerned with the waterways of the Koshi River. The connectivity of terminals to the existing road network will be also studied.
  6. Socio-economic and Environmental study - Environmental assessment due to river navigation shall be carried out. The river ecosystem. Environmental degradation by river terminal facilities and navigation etc. will be addressed during the study. Site selection of the proposed locations along with all details for hand/asset acquisition and livelihood impacts, including ownership and estimated cost of land will be studied. The socio - economic impact of navigation in the local life of people and the market study of urban and rural municipalities to benefit from the proposed navigation will also be discussed in the study.
  7. Design and cost estimation - Preparation of layout and design of the navigation improvement works and terminals shall be prepared cost estimate will be prepared for terminal and navigation improvement works.
  8. Reporting and Recommendation – All the design, and planning with tentative cost shall be prepared and will be submitted to clients
